Baglan Brancuf Stone

St Catherines

Our Taibach Historian Mr.A Leslie Evans, tells us a little about The Brancu Stone which is preserved in St.Catherine`s Church Baglan.
He links it with the Dark Ages,a small rectangular slab [28ins by 16ins] ascribed to the 9th or 10th Century, which bears a charming example of Celtic ornament. It is richly carved with a Latin wheel cross in low relief, formed by
an interlaced double ribbon, and the name Brancu appears on its lower right side, followed by the early Christian Chi-Rho sign. This sign, owing to weathering, was formerly mistaken for the letter " f " ,so that the name was rendered as
Brancuf. The stone is evidently sepulchral in character, bearing the name of a long forgotten person of some local importance.Professor Westward,in his account of the stone which appeared in 1851,says that he saw it in the coping of
the old churchyard wall, close to a stile near the southern entrance.
Today one can see the stone in the north transept of St.Catherine`s Church Baglan.
